Regional and Suburban Railways

VERKEHRSVERBUND Rhein-Neckar (VRN) kindly hosted the meeting of the Regional and Suburban Railways (RSR) Committee in Mannheim, Germany, on 25-27 March. Werner Schreiner welcomed all the participants and introduced VRN’s role and various rail developments in the region. The Committee focused on its working topics and approved the final report ‘One small step…’ drafted by the working group on Accessibility and which will be available at the World Congress in Vienna.
The meeting was complemented by a visit to BASF’s plant, the huge German chemical company which offers a unique service by operating public transport for its employees by bus and on 200 km of rail network.
The next meeting will take place on 22-24 September in Brussels, together with the Workshop on European rail legislation on 22 September (read more on page 4). Other future activities include a Committee meeting together with the 5th RSR Assembly and 1st RSR Study Tour on 12-16 April 2010 in Tokyo, Japan.
