31.03.10 The International Association of Public Transport condemns Moscow bombings

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) presents its deepest condolences to its Russian colleagues of Moscow Metro and to the families of the victims and expresses its solidarity and support.
Moscow Metro is a member of UITP Security Commission, a permanent working group set up in 2004 to respond to the growing challenges of security in public transport.

Collaborative success: over 130 participants gathered in Montreal in the interest of increased security

FOR the first time since 1999, UITP and the Canadian Urban Transit Association CUTA joined forces to bring about the Joint International Security Conference. Taking place in Montreal on 11-12 November, with support from local host Société de Transport de Montréal (STM), the conference showcased presentations from Canada, the Middle East, the USA, Singapore and all across Europe.

The bringing together of knowledge from around the world enabled participants to exchange best practices and learn about innovative measures to combat daily operational security issues as well as the challenge of terrorism.

One highlight of the conference was the signing of the ‘Montreal Declaration’, a joint endeavour by UITP and CUTA to encourage members to conduct a security risk assessment, a practice considered by both associations as extremely efficient and beneficial for the planning of security measures of a public transport network.

From risk assessment as a starting point, the basic layers of security were laid out in the conference sessions, and a final session entitled ‘Achieving the balance’ demonstrated real examples of how organisations can pull everything together to achieve a balanced security approach.
