  • European transport policy is currently at a cross-road as far as its urban, suburban and regional dimensions are concerned. In view of the new European Parliament, the UITP EU-Committee developed a brochure that sets out in a nutshell three major aspects for sustainable urban mobility:
    - Sending the right message to travelers on the basis of the “polluter pays” principle;
    - Making it easy to travel differently, in a sustainable way;
    - From public transport operators to mobility service providers.

    Modal shift and a change of personal mobility choices represent major elements for the development of sustainable urban mobility policy. Supporting and encouraging those efforts should be one of the political priorities of the European Union.

    UITP´s strategy for the public transport sector: Public transport: the smart green solution
    2

    At its 58th World Congress and Exhibition in Vienna in June 2009, UITP launched an ambitious strategy for the public transport sector: our target is to double public transport market share worldwide by the year 2025!

    This strategy titled ‘Public transport: the smart green solution’ calls on all mobility stakeholders to make a joint effort to put public transport high on the political agenda, as THE solution to fight climate change, economic recession, congestion and social exclusion.

    It also invites all players to fully assume their roles by:

    • Developing visionary integrated policies
    • Delivering life-style services to become the mode of choice for citizens
    • Creating a new business culture
    • Securing stable funding and investment schemes
    • Using stick-and-carrot tactics
