UITP handed out awards for the world’s best light rail projects at its International Light Rail Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, on 11-13 June 2008.
The Jury was made up of the members of the UITP’s Light Rail Committee. At their meeting in Paris, they selected winners for projects in 3 categories:
- Metro do Porto, Porto, Portugal, as Best New Light Rail Realisation
- Tramwaje Warszawskie, Warsaw, Poland, as Best Modernisation Achievement
- Yarra Trams, Melbourne, Australia, as Best Accessibility Improvement Project
The criteria for selecting the winners were innovation in the project’s conception and design, excellence on its implementation, and a measurable positive impact on the mobility and lifestyle of citizens. All three selected projects stand out especially in this last category.
