UITP member recognised at Sustainable Transport Award
MILAN, Italy, was awarded an 'Honourable Mention' at the 2009 Sustainable Transport Award given by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) which promotes sustainable and equitable transportation worldwide. This rewards the introduction of the EcoPass by Milan, making it runner-up to New York, the first US city to win this prestigious award. The EcoPass scheme charges up to EUR10 to vehicles entering Milan's city centre depending on the vehicle's environmental performance. This measure was designed to cut local pollution by 30% and reduce congestion by 10% and is one of the first urban tolls linked to environmental performance. UITP members are encouraged to put their projects forward for consideration in the next call for nominations that will be announced this August.

The Sustainable Development Charter: A growing family!
MAKING tomorrow today - UITP’s 2nd Sustainable Development Conference - hosted in Milan, Italy by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi SpA attracted over 200 delegates from around the world. This has become the meeting place for adherents to the Sustainable Development Charter and a major forum for members to find out what it means to implement this approach in organising and operating public transport.

Sessions addressed critical issues such as the carbon footprint of public transport, financing sustainability, and communicating the sustainable advantages of public transport. Several innovative features included the attendance of youth delegations from Germany and Italy and the 1st UITP Handbook on Sustainable Development. All presentations can be found in Mobi+ or on a CD on sale at www.uitp.org/publications.
The following transport operators became new pledge signatories: Connexxion, the Netherlands; Dublin Bus, Ireland; SNCF, France; Metro do Porto and Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto, Portugal.  More organising authorities also joined the club: Agenzia Mobilita E Ambiente, Milan, Italy and Ab Storstockholms Lokaltrafik SL Stockholm, Sweden as well as two Car-Sharing clubs: Greenwheels, the Netherlands and Communauto Montreal, Canada. Utah Transit Authority, USA, and Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe, Germany moved from pledge to full signatory in recognition of their progress.

The next milestone is the Vienna Congress where the Sustainable Development Commission will present the framework for reporting on sustainability that all full signatories will be asked to pilot over the next two years. Contact us to become a charter signatory before the Vienna Congress!

UITP Direct welcomes Eveline Branders, Co-chairperson of the Climate Change and Communications Joint Working Group and Sustainable Development Manager of STIB, Brussels’ public transport operator.

The joint Climate Change and Communications Working Group was launched in October. Could you tell us more about the role of this group?

This joint working group highlights that only a close collaboration can enable us to communicate in a convincing way on climate change. Environmentalists can provide complete and accurate information on the subject whereas communicators have the ability to turn it into understandable and accessible messages.
For public transport networks, this is the right moment to communicate as climate change is under the spotlight. We must reiterate to citizens but also to political decision-makers that behavioural change in favour of public transport is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to combat climate change.

One of the first topics in the agenda of the group was the UNEP/UITP international television campaign. What is next in the pipeline?

The next mission of the working group is to create a database of the campaigns already developed by public transport networks around the world. We will collect information on the type of messages conveyed, the target audiences, the type of partnerships developed but also on the way the results are measured not only in terms of visibility but also in terms of credibility and/or behavioural change. We will also look into the level of investments allocated to such campaigns. This database will provide us with a broad view of best practices worldwide and will hopefully enable us to identify targeted and realistic actions that have offered an excellent return on investment for a limited budget.

Ms Branders, thank you very much.

And congratulations to STIB for winning the Belgian 2008 premium award for Energy and Environment.
