Combined mobility
Combined Mobility: public transport in synergy with other modes like car-sharing,
taxi, cycling...
What is combined mobility?
In order to limit private car use in the city and to improve the quality, offer
and image of public transport, more and more networks choose to provide combined
mobility packages to their customers. Indeed in mobility management, a wide range
of modes and services are available and can complement the public transport offer.
By building partnerships and alliances with these mobility actors, public transport
operators are able to provide an ever broader mix of mobility services and thereby
more convenience and door-to-door solutions for customers. In this way they promote
the use of soft modes and bundle customer needs into a single card. These new
mobility solutions induce a change of behaviour in the population towards private
car use. By supporting innovative mobility solutions, public transport operators
significantly alleviate congestion in cities as customers are able to choose
between various mobility options and have thus a real alternative to the owning
of a car.
This is even stated as one of the solutions in the UITP
strategy for the sector ‘Public transport: the smart green solution’:
to deliver lifestyle services which will become the mode of choice for citizens.
UITP asks public transport operators to become true mobility providers by developing
intermodal strategic partnerships and alliances with taxis, bikes and car-sharing,
parking facilities, information providers and all major mobility generators.

Introduction and mission
The Combined mobility Platform has emerged from the Car-Sharing Platform. The
idea was to integrate all complementary mobility services to public transport
in one single Platform in order to stimulate interaction and debate among all
combined mobility actors, including public transport operators and organising
authorities. The major mission of this Platform is to promote collaboration between
all these stakeholders in order to develop a comprehensive mobility offer responding
to all the needs of the users and facilitating door-to-door mobility.
As it was stated in the CarSharing Platform brochure some years ago already:
“As flexibility has become the key concept for the 21st century, mobility
has replaced transport – individual and public. In order to provide seamless
mobility to their customers, public transport companies are providing an ever
broader mix of mobility services by building new alliances with actors such as
CarSharing operators, taxis, etc.”
