    UITP General Assembly
    20 May 2007, Helsinki , Finland

    - Highlights -

    MEMBERS attended in large numbers UITP biannual General Assembly in Helsinki, Finland, on 20 May. Roberto Cavalieri, UITP President since June 2005, chaired the Assembly and invited members to make their voice heard on the Association’s future.

    The creation of a new Eurasian Division received a resounding approval from members. This decision acknowledges the continuous grow of UITP members in Eurasia over the last years. “Eurasia is a region with its own specific challenges to face and with a great potential” said Dmitry Gaev, Moscow Metro, who becomes the first Chairperson of the Eurasian Assembly. Peter Ivanov, Mosgortrans, is the new Chairperson of the Eurasian Executive Committee.

    UITP Vice-Presidents Peter Höflinger, Germany and Raymond Hue, France, presented respectively the Association’s finances (2005-2006 accounts; the 2007 budget and the 2008 financial framework) and the adaptations of the membership fee structure. All those issues received the approval of the members.

    Another highlight was the highly supported re-election of Roberto Cavalieri, MetRo of Rome, for a second term as President. Mr Cavalieri’s priorities for 2007-2009 include:

    -
    The reinforcement of the sector’s communication and lobbying, both to decision-makers and the general public;
    -
    Reaching out to the youth, as our clients of the future,
    -
    Innovating in financing public transport, and;
    -
    Promoting public transport as an efficient mean to mitigate climate change.

    UITP Secretary General, Hans Rat, looked back on the past two years and presented a new vision and mission for UITP reflecting the evolution of the Association, its services and its future orientation.

    Last but not least, the new Executive and Policy Boards of UITP were presented and all outgoing Chairpersons of UITP’s assemblies, committees and commissions were given a big round of applause for their active participation. The next UITP General Assembly will take place in Vienna, Austria, preceding the 58th UITP World Congress in 2009.
