INTRODUCTION
Milan is proud to host the 2nd UITP Sustainable Development Conference ‘Making Tomorrow Today’. This important international event is an opportunity to share ideas, projects and values and it is also a moment when mutual interests in creating a sustainable future can come together.
There are many unanswered questions. What do we expect from this future? What solutions do we need? What responses are we still lacking? Which resources need to be employed?
It will be stimulating to work together at this conference and come up with some answers to these questions, pooling our diverse experiences from all over the world and learning from each other.
Milan will be able to share with you its experience as a city undergoing great change but one who sees its future firmly grounded in sustainability.
It is now well known that Milan has been awarded the Expo 2015: so this is also a perfect time to discover the city and experience its public transport network, fully engaged in the exciting transition of transforming today’s Milan into the Milan of tomorrow.
In this fast-moving world, ATM– Azienda Trasporti Milanesi SpA – is happy to take up this challenge and act as a ‘citizen of the world. It is also honoured to be able to host this conference and be given the opportunity to demonstrate the efforts it is making on a daily basis to effectively combine the values of the past with the innovations of tomorrow.
I am, therefore, personally proud to welcome everyone and I look forward to seeing you all in October in Milan.
Elio Catania
Chairman and CEO ATM Group
UITP launched its Sustainable Development Charter in 2003 with 33 pioneer signatories and held its first conference on this important topic in 2003. I am delighted to see that now more than 130 UITP members have signed the charter and made a commitment to report on their own performance. The past few years have been an important learning period for UITP on how to implement sustainability in public transport organization, operations and supply. This second conference will bring together much of this learning and I invite you to join us in Milan.
Hans Rat
UITP Secretary General
Following up on the success of the first edition which was held in Bilbao (Spain) in 2006, we wish to share the continuous and strong involvement of our sector in this key issue of the 21st century. The programme has been developed to offer a panorama of different challenges faced by Public Transport and to discuss the different innovative solutions, and how public transport can play a more visible role globally to achieve a sustainable future for us all. The vision of the younger generation will bring an added dimension to our debates.
We hope that many of you will be able to join in these exchanges, and that this conference will help you to sustainably achieve your current and future projects.
We wish you a pleasant stay in Milan
