    Introduction

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) organises this seminar in order to reflect on the tools and opportunities to manage the specific demands caused by situations such as large events. Ensuring the quality of mobility and using the opportunity to improve public transport are some of the points that will be addressed.

UITP has a group of technical experts that evaluates the deployment of transportation systems, analyzing the benefits and needs of cities and countries to receive a large event. The event may be local, regional or international, but independently of the coverage it will require a specific mobility. Questions range from How to prepare the transport system for this situation, how to create the necessary investments and how to create a system that suits the needs of daily mobility, to how to use this opportunity to promote modal public transport in all layers of society. With the support of the metropolitan authority of Recife - Grande Recife, we will bring out the main issues surrounding the topic.

The event is designed for 150 participants, particularly official authorities and operators throughout Latin America. Guadalajara in México is preparing the Pan-American Games 2011; Brazil is preparing to receive the FIFA World Cup 2014; Peru would try to bid for the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympic Games; Guadalajara in México was chosen as the applicant city for the 2014 Youth Summer Olympics; Mexico registered their intention to bid with 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and  Monterrey in México will gain support to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, and plans were announced to build two stadiums: one for a capacity of 75,000 persons and the other with a  capacity of 50,000 spectators  by the end of 2009. Both stadiums could be used for some eventual Olympic events.

These numbers show that the Latin America region would like to be in the international agenda of large events preparing strong investments in infrastructure.
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the decision makers and operators that will be responsible for that transformation.
