PTx2 at the heart of Policy Board meeting in Shanghai
Policy Board meeting in Shanghai
THE UITP Policy Board had the very interesting opportunity to meet
in Shanghai, China, on 5-8 May during the first week of the opening
of the Shanghai World Expo 2010: ‘Better City, Better Life’,
at the kind invitation of Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority
(SMTPA).
Jianping Sun, Director General of SMTPA, welcomed the Policy Board
members with a very interesting speech on the Shanghai future transport
strategy. The role of public transport in economic and social development
was presented by Ximing Lu, the Chief of the Shanghai Urban Planning
and Design Research Institute. Chaired by Alain Flausch, an interesting
debate followed on new economic models for the sector of public transport
in China moving towards its international expansion. The meeting also
included speeches from a panel of industry representatives aimed at
sharing their experience on their future perspectives.
The core topic of the Policy Board working sessions was the UITP PTx2
strategy, ‘Public Transport: The smart green solution’,
the aim of which is to double public transport market share worldwide
by 2025. It has now been recognised that it is possible to turn this
PTx2 vision into reality. The working sessions provided an opportunity
to remind members that the strategy is a valuable tool to help them
boost their own business, as it offers an extraordinary wealth of arguments
and messages to support their actions towards governments, authorities
and stakeholders. The dynamic ‘World Café’ discussion
format of the working sessions was highly appreciated and generated
very fruitful contributions to the five pillars of the strategy: Lifestyle
services, Urban governance, New business culture, Financing and Demand
management.
Meanwhile, the visit organised to the Shanghai World Expo 2010 was
also an opportunity for UITP to officially unveil the UITP Pavilion
in the presence of the UITP Policy Board members. With the aim of showing
the world that ‘Public Transport is the Solution for our Future!’,
the UITP Pavilion is open until 31 October 2010. On 28 August, during
the UITP Honour Day, the Presentation Ceremony will be held for the
UITP Solutions for our Future Award. For more information, see: www.uitp.org/worldexpo2010.
The next Policy Board meeting will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on
17-19 September 2010, at the kind invitation of Alain Flausch, CEO of
STIB - Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles.
The UITP Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China opened on 1 May and will be welcoming visitors until 31 October. The intriguing design of the UITP Pavilion features slopes, tracks and roads, hoping to spark visitors’ interest. The idea behind the stand is to illustrate sustainable interaction between humans, nature and public transport, and to portray how public transport is closely linked with the environment. Public transport elements are also integrated into the design.
The history of UITP over the past 125 years is on display, along with success stories of integration between public transport and urban planning. Members have also displayed their achievements and strategic plans. An important part of the Expo activity is the Study Tours organised between May and October, and the UITP Honor Day on 28 August. Meanwhile, UITP was featured on Chinese television channels CCTV 1, 2 and 4 and on CCTV News in a special programme airing on 30 April and 1 May to celebrate the launch of the Expo in China.
The UITP Pavilion at the World Expo displays information on UITP activities and events, including the upcoming World Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition in Dubai.
Jianping Sun, Director General, Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority (SMPTA), describes how Shanghai has improved public transport infrastructure to welcome Expo visitors.
Shanghai has prepared well for the Expo through the ‘Public Transport in Priority’ strategy. Infrastructure and mobility efficiency have been improved and 11 metro lines, 280 metro stations and 420km of metro lines are in place. To better serve the community and citizens, 42 newly established bus lines connect the suburbs with Shanghai city centre. Meanwhile, 100km of bus lanes have been built inside the Expo Park. Stations are well connected with other interchange facilities to allow for seamless and safe journeys!
