    UITP in the press

    November 2007-March 2008

With the first phase of roll-out of our joint television campaign with the United Nations, UITP’s message on public transport and climate change has been widely aired on major international TV stations, such as BBC World, CNN, Sky News and Bloomberg. The ad has been widely circulated on the internet as well, such as You Tube, EurActiv.com as well as websites of a number of UITP’s members, like Alstom and Veolia. The written press has also shown an interest in the ad, with articles published in The Guardian (UK), The Hindu (India), Le Temps (Tunisia), and trade press such as Coach and Bus Week (UK) and NaNa (Germany). Many more diffusion possibilities are in the pipe-line.

Coverage in the home country of UITP’s main office was good recently. Two prime-time interviews were conducted with Hans Rat and regional transport ministers on Belgian national radio (RTBF) in early 2008; one on the subject of congestion charging and the other on free public transport. Belgian newspapers such as the free paper, Metro and De Standaard also spoke of the UITP Marketing Awards that were won by the operators STIB and De Lijn, and Le Soir quoted UITP on the topic of intelligent cameras and security.

In Latin America, UITP’s information on car-sharing made front-page news in the leading Mexican daily, La Reforma. The Brazilian dailys Folha de Sao Paulo and Agora wrote about the problem of congestion in the city in the framework of the seminar on congestion charging held there early this year.

The topic of rail was widely covered in the press in recent months. Business Week did a feature on light rail and metros, for which it interviewed UITP Secretary General, Hans Rat. The meeting of the Light Rail Commission in Tenerife, Spain, also met with much interest from local press, like El Día and El Mundo. The 50th anniversary of UITP’s Metro Division and the celebratory photo competition featured in a number of trade journals like Track and Signal (Australia), Nahverkehrspraxis (Germany) and Entravía(Spain). International Railway Journal also published an in-depth interview with Hans Rat on the role of rail in dealing with increasing urbanisation.

There has been huge interest in UITP in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, notably with the organisation of our MENA Congress and Showcase at the end of last year. The key event was covered in all the main media outlets in the United Arab Emirates, such as Al Bayan, Gulf News and the Khaleej Times. The training seminar held by UITP in Quatar at the end of the year also attracted a lot of local media interest, notably in the Gulf Times. And the seminar held in Tunisia in March was covered in national and regional press, such as La Presse and All Africa. Finally, the leading Moroccan business journal, L’Economiste, published a UITP interview on the subject of financing public transport.

South African media, including the South African Press Association, published a number of articles on the role of public transport in alleviating poverty, following an intervention of the transport minister in the UITP/UATP seminar held in March. And our President, Roberto Cavalieri, was interviewed on Ugandan radio.

Innovations and new technologies in public transport were the subject massive media interest in the German-speaking world as a result of the first edition of IT-TRANS in Karlsruhe earlier this year. Information about the event was relayed through press agencies Reuters, APA (Austria) and OTS (Switzerland), in the trade press (Personenvervoer, Netherlands; Infobus, Poland; Bus and Coach News, Australia; Bus & Bahn, Germany, to name a few), as well through local TV, radio and financial press.

With over one year to go to our World Congress and Exhibition in Vienna, media interest in the event is already starting, with articles on the Congress theme in trade press such as ITS and Australasian Bus and Coach, and information diffused through the Austrian press agency, APA.

In Asia-Pacific, as well as the interest in the Assembly relayed through Indian press like The Hindu, Hans Rat was quoted in Singapore’s main newspaper, Straits Times as well as on AsiaOne News following his participation in the International Advisory Panel on public transport.

UITP also enjoyed visibility in Russian, Polish and Turkish press.

Finally, it is interesting to note that UITP data on the economic cost of congestion in Europe is cited in a major journal of the car industry, Automotive World.

Copies of articles and our full monthly press books are available on request.
