UITP is extending its cooperation with World Bank Group in the area of capacity building in public transport.
Under this UITP partnership, MENA Centre for Transport Excellence in collaboration with the World Bank have organised a five-day learning programme in Dubai from 25 February to 1 March 2018. The programme will be hosted by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and aims at developing leadership capabilities in urban mobility planning.
The training will cover the main components of integrated mobility planning and how it needs to be undertaken. It involves a ‘hands on’ learning approach, making extensive use of case studies, group exercises and a site visit.
The training sessions will be preceded by a self-learning phase, from the participants’ work location, during which they will need to go through a self- learning course, based on material provided to them.
The sessions will cover transport planning, corridor management, role of government, public-private partnership as well as address current issues, such as green mobility. The trainers include international experts from both the World Bank and the MENA region.
Building flyovers and road widening has often led to a notable increase in road traffic and congestion. Others have built mass transit systems, but high costs have limited their extent and coverage. So what is the right direction to take?
The programme has been conducted each year since 2014 and is well attended by key decision makers from the Middle East and other parts of the world. The region is witnessing a clear paradigm shift towards public transport, as seen by the significant investments in public transport projects, the programme is highly recommended for policy makers or consultants, strategic planners and public transport professionals.
UITP and World Bank Group also cooperated for the organisation of Buildng Leaders in Urban Transport Capacity Building Programme in Africa, as well as for various other joint-training programmes in different countries.
