The world’s leading bus operators as well as experts in the field met in Rio between 5 and 7 November 2014 to explore emerging trends and topics in the bus industry. This was UITP’s 8th International Bus Conference, attended by 281 participants over two days under the motto “Grow with Bus Public Transport”.

Buses need to integrate with other modes in order to keep up with the times and customers' expectations, conference attendees heard. Another prominent talking point concerned the evolution of e-bus charging technology, which has developed greatly since the last Bus Conference in 2012 that took place in Istanbul.

South America is known around the world as the birthplace of BRT, and delegates were reminded of the strong business case for the mode (as well as its European equivalent, BHLS) and how important it was to bring this strong business case to policy-makers.

Conference topics were gathered in five clusters: grow with operations solutions, e-buses, large events, security and safety, operation economics and new technologies and innovation. Case studies of successful bus operations from around the world were presented and topics such as cost effectiveness, energy efficiency and innovation were also on the agenda.

Key speakers included Alain Flausch, Secretary general of UITP as well as Mike Weston, Director for Buses at Transport for London.

The need to continue strong growth in public transport, including bus operations is paramount to maintaining and improving sustainable transport worldwide and this conference brought a number of useful ideas forward.
