As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the Metro Division of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) held a metro photo competition to find a photo that captures the ‘heart and soul’ of metros in the 21st century.
First prize in the competition went to Metropolitana di Roma SpA for its photo of a pregnant women waiting for a metro. The photo’s title, ‘Waiting’, has a double meaning: the women’s expectation of her baby and of the journey ahead. “The photo expresses the idea of being transported into the future, a bright future. It is not only a symbol of technology but is also laden with humanity. The meaningful upward glance of the women gives a sense of serenity and optimism,” explained Paolo Palamà of Metropolitana di Roma.
The photo was taken in June 2007 on line A of Rome’s metro by Emiliano Larizza, the official photographer of Met.Ro and a press photographer. It will illustrate the cover of next month’s special edition of UITP’s magazine, Public Transport International (PTI), which will be dedicated to metros.

The special metro issue of Public Transport International will look at some of the hot topics for metros today, such as automation (‘unattended train operation’) and operations during major events like the football World Cup. With a focus on recent metro developments in India and China, it will also include a map of the world’s metro systems.
