Monday, 2 October 2017, was World Habitat Day—a day designated by the United Nations (UN) as an occasion to reflect on the state of our cities and towns. The constant improvement of the living conditions and the development of services for inhabitants is the fundamental focus. This includes affordable, accessible and sustainable transport. In light of this, we would like to introduce a new project, which we feel has this same aim to improve the lives of city inhabitants: FAIR Stations.
Being one of the most sustainable modes of transport, railways represent a key element of the transportation system of the future, and the stations are a central component of rail networks. Stations’ role has evolved over the years, passing from a place where passengers simply board and alight to a more complex area including restaurants, shops, hotels and other facilities with additional functions. This has generated issues with congestion, guidance and security, which can negatively affect the customer experience – in particular, people with reduced mobility.
Thus, the FAIR Stations project, which began in September, studies new solutions for improving the user flow both in rail stations and at the platform. Since the railway stations are becoming more and more complex, the risks of security issues and congestion arise, which affects the quality of customer experience. FAIR Stations aims to develop various station designs and solutions for platform train interface (PTI) and train door access, which would help to make the journey more pleasurable, safe and smooth.
More concretely, the project will focus on specific solutions, such as arranging the station facilities and infrastructure to ensure a smooth flow of passengers, especially in peak times and in emergency situations. When it comes to the boarding the train, FAIR Stations will look into adaptable gap fillers or platform position sensors, which will help all passengers board the train effortlessly.
The project, funded by the EU and coordinated by STAM SRL, gathers eight partners. UITP will contribute to the project by identifying user needs and expectations as well as benchmarking of station designs and accessibility. UITP will also participate in the evaluation and validation of the developed design concepts.
