Human factors that influence safety

Human factors such as human capabilities, limitations, physical conditions and psychological states, play a significant role in transportation safety. Understanding these human factors, taking into account the diversity of failures and contexts of errors, and adopting a systemic vision can help influence these factors, as part of a risk management approach to decrease accidents.

UITP has recently published a Knowledge Brief entitled 'The Human Factors of Safety', which observes the positive and adverse effects of the human factor, types of human failures, intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the human factor, and asks public transport operators to consider a risk management framework. It also gives tools for the creation of a culture of safety.
