As the number and diversity of urban mobility services is rapidly growing all over the world, it is no wonder that Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is such a hot topic.

Picture this: you need to get to work within the next 20 minutes and you don’t have much money left on your bank card. Searching for the quickest and cheapest mobility option is difficult. With all these options available, where do you start? How do you know that you’re choosing the best service?

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is all about the integration of and access to different transport services in one digital mobility offer. This tailor-made service suggests the most suitable solutions based on the traveller’s needs, ensuring a door-to-door service and enabling life without having to own a car.

While it is crucial to place the user at the heart of MaaS, this mobility solution has benefits for more than just the users. City authorities aiming to reach their public policy goals, and public transport operators looking to provide better services and increase the number of public transport users, can also take a slice of the action. With this in mind, MaaS should be created in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to ensure impartiality, trust and benefits for all.

With this collaboration comes the need for a regulatory framework that guarantees high capacity public transport and active modes remain the backbone of any MaaS.

It is imperative to act now to ensure MaaS is the desired tool to build a more sustainable future as global platforms are already becoming widely available.

Yet, if city authorities and public transport operators don’t act now, then there is a high risk that other global platforms will take their place and they will lose the ability to shape the future of urban mobility systems. The window of opportunity is getting smaller and the necessity to provide users with sustainable and accessible mobility services is ever increasing!

The new UITP Policy Brief, 'Ready for MaaS? Accelerating easier mobility for citizens and better data for cities' aims at giving authorities precious insights into the opportunities and measures to be taken. So, find out everything you need to know on MaaS: from customer expectations, to business partner’s needs, business models and regulatory measures to boost MaaS deployment.
