Due to the events in Brussels on 22 March, which included explosions at the international airport as well as in the metro, STIB, the Brussels public transport operator had decided to completely shut down its city network. Part of the network was reopened during the same evening, with nigh bus lines helping people to get back from work.

Since 23 March the operator is progressively reopening the network, with some metros operated (or replaced by buses), as well as the majority of bus and tram lines.

The STIB also said that it will keep passengers informed via its Twitter and Facebook accounts or at the crisis center number 1771.
