An agreement has been signed in Astana today to open a UITP liaison office in the city. This is the third local office that UITP has opened in 2015.
An affiliate of UITP’s regional office in Moscow, the new liaison office is being established to better address the needs of UITP members in Kazakhstan. The office will be headed by UITP’s Yussup Khassiev and will be hosted within the premises of ASTRA, a new transport authority created this week for the planning, management and development of transport in Astana.
By opening this Astana Office, UITP is supporting and accompanying the rapid development of public transport projects in the Kazakh capital and beyond.
Kazakhstan is currently undergoing strong economic development and faces many mobility challenges, as well as opportunities to develop its public transport systems. According to Mr. Mohamed Mezghani, UITP Deputy Secretary General who is in Astana to sign the accord, “By opening this Astana Office, UITP is supporting and accompanying the rapid development of public transport projects in the Kazakh capital and beyond. We shall provide assistance, capacity building, information on worldwide experience and business networking opportunities, and promote the promising local developments to the wider public transport community worldwide.”
The agreement was signed by Mr. Mezghani and Mr. Talgat Ardan, CEO of Astana LRT, who called the occasion “a very special day”, adding, “I'm extremely glad that UITP office had been opened in Astana. This is a great recognition for the city. I thank everyone for the support. Astana officially joins the club of cities where public transport development is given close attention.”
The signing took place in the context of Astana Invest Forum, a platform for meetings between representatives of local establishment and foreign and Kazakhstani business communities to discuss regional investment development that has attracted more than 1,000 delegates from over 20 countries.

It will ensure a better connection between public transport peers in the region, and potential business partners globally. It will also consolidate local knowledge, monitor developments, develop region-specific activities and services, as well as advocate for sustainable urban transport in Eurasia and beyond.
