The 2017 edition of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK was a huge success, with a record-breaking 2,526 participating cities, towns, schools and businesses, registering 671 MOBILITYACTIONS from 50 countries, under the theme of ‘clean, shared and intelligent mobility’.

On 21 March, at an award ceremony held in Brussels, Belgium, this year’s winners were officially announced and celebrated. As part of the jury, UITP was proud to take part in last night’s events, and extend our sincerest congratulations to Vienna, Igoumenitsa and Turda for their achievements and sustainable mobility actions.

Vienna, Austria, the winner in the category of ‘large municipalities’ with a population count of around 1.8 million residents, issued a variety of impressive activites. Some of the actions that really stood out included free cargo bike renting, guided walks through different city neighbourhoods, and hosting an urban picnic on a street typically used for cars. During the week, Wiener Linien inspired innovative mobility solutions with their free app WienMobil, which links to different mobility options for travellers to customise their journeys.

Out of the ‘small municipality’ entries, Igoumenitsa, Greece, took first place. This small city impressed the jury with big actions to promote sustainable mobility. some activities included free bus transfers at selected times, daily cycling events held along the coastal front of the city, and a cultural hike through the forest. As a permanent measure, the city has constructed a new network of pedestrian and bike routes through the city centre.

The sixth SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning) award was presented to Turda, Romania. With the clear planning, financial strategy and measurable targets they put forward, this city puts forth a shining example of how to strategize for a more sustainable mobility lifestyle.

Congratulations to all the winners, and we are excited to see what this year’s EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK will bring! Speaking of which…

The 2018 edition of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK will take place from 16-22 September and highlights MOBILITYACTIONS under the theme ‘Mix and move!’ exploring the different options presented through multimodality.

“It is the mix between traditional stakeholders and new players that makes the new mobility landscape”, said Mohamed Mezghani, UITP Secretary General, keynote speaker of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2018 workshop. “It is this mix that defines the new scope of multimodality, right up to the end of the last mile.”

Looking forward to mixing and moving with you all in September!
