PUBLIC TRANSPORT & SOCIAL INCLUSION - GOOD PRACTICES
Introduction to the collection of good practices
Public transport plays an important role in helping re-connect socially excluded citizens to the social and economic structures of society. Therefore public transport significantly contributes to the delivery of social inclusion policies.
The ability to access – in the spatial sense – jobs, education, health services, and other facilities is a key factor of social inclusion. Public transport initiatives in many cities have helped overcome barriers to spatial mobility: high quality public transport information, integrated ticketing and concessionary fare schemes, low floor vehicles and a range of features to improve accessibility of impaired people, demand-responsive services for specific target groups, increased security for women, etc. In a number of cities partnerships between public transport and actors of social inclusion have fully integrated the mobility dimension in the package developed to provide jobs, education or better health. Finally, the public transport sector also contributes to social inclusion by offering job opportunities to citizens, including those with low qualifications, in urban areas.
The purpose of this collection of good practices is to inspire both social policy makers and public transport professionals towards the development of partnerships for the full development of the potential of public transport for social inclusion.
