Activities
UITP ANZ is the only transport Association in Australia and New Zealand that represents all modes of transport with a presence in the national capital, with direct international affiliations.
Membership in Australia and New Zealand represents the nation’s biggest urban public transport operators, every State and Territory Department of Transport (or equivalent), most major equipment suppliers and manufacturers, major consultants, bankers and a small number of individual members.
UITP (Australia/New Zealand) has consolidated the office to provide members with a national profile in Canberra. This has only been achieved through the dedicated support of Members, chiefly over the last seven years following our affiliation with UITP in Europe. The relocation of the national secretariat was a major shift for the Australian mass urban transport industry in Australia and indicates “that our industry is prepared to make a difference on key reform issues”. The national profile provides an opportunity to present our message in a forthright, professional manner before all parties in Government.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OUTCOMES?
- $1.5 MILLION FOR NATIONAL TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR CHANGE
After a period of three years intensive advocacy work by the International Association of Public Transport (Australia/New Zealand) and other groups around Australia, Australian Government funding to members of $1.5 million for the NATIONAL TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR CHANGE PROJECT.
- Following a long period of forceful promotion, the Energy Grants (Cleaner Fuels) Scheme Bill was amended to provide a longer excise-free period for biofuels, including ethanol. The extension of excise-free arrangements will apply to the manufacture and importation of ethanol, biodiesel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and methanol. The amendment means local biofuel producers, including ethanol producers, will have an 8 year excise-free period until 30 June 2011 to help kickstart their operations. The announcement brings into line excise on all biofuels.
- Further expansion of the “TRAVELSMART” Program around Australia with the Australian Greenhouse Office providing over $1,000,000 in grants to UITP Members in 2005.
- Establishment of the Australian Passenger Transport Alliance – an affiliation of the UITP, Bus Industry Confederation and the Australasian Railway Association.
- Sustainable Cities and Future Oil Supply Inquiries - recommendations to support public transport in the areas of taxation and infrastructure investment – a significant policy initiative for the Federal Government.
