Introduction

Business intelligence (BI) is needed to support decision makers in public transport. It helps to make better decision faster, to improve for example service, performance or profitability. Data can make a difference in practically all areas, from operations management and transport planning to policymaking and strategic decision-making. Yet today’s complexity and abundance of data can make it challenging for transport professionals to unlock the value of their data. Obtaining value by driving information from the data is yet another challenge. BI and BI tools make it easy to act agile, and accurate.

It is undeniable that artificial intelligence (AI) is growing its importance in every sector, including public transport. The use of AI applications in public transport could be one of the critical solutions that efficiently unlocks the value of data to improve the quality and efficiency of the public transport sector. Applying AI to our current methods of providing public transport enables us to move forward on many fronts to improve all aspects of provision.

This course aims at providing an insight into the main principles, processes and tools to inform policy- and decision-makers accurately and to transform Big Data into results and to show how AI applications can help to better serve: identifying the broader strategic objectives and linking them to associated goals and success factors will eventually allow choosing the most accurate indicators and processing the right dashboards. In addition, the course will also look at the opportunities and value created by Open Data and Data Sharing.

The course follows the standards of:

  • ISO 13053-1 & 2: Quantitative Methods in Process Improvement — Six Sigma
  • ISO 29990: Learning Services for Non-Formal Education and Training

What You Will Learn

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Learn about the main principles, processes and tools required to use data and build a sound business intelligence system and organisation to improve public transport and sustainable urban mobility in cities
  • Understand the importance of having a good organisation of data and learn from best practice on implementing a management information system
  • Learn from international best practices and exchange of knowledge on the optimal use of new technologies

  • A good level of English is a mandatory requirement to attend the training

Programme

Welcome, objectives and introduction to the programme

09:00 09:30

Data has been in and around public transport for some time now. It has not only changed the way Public Transport is operated and used, but it has also changed expectations passengers have. Which changes have taken place in general, and which in the regions of participants? What is expected to happen in the future? And how will this impact passenger expectations? In this first session all these items will be discussed.

Coffee break

11:00 11:30

This session will look into the use and impact of new technologies, which open new perspectives in the way data is collected. Apart from the secondary data, a large amount of primary data is being collected from smart cards, telematics systems, GPS systems and vehicle detection systems, almost on a real-time basis. In addition, large amount of customer or operational data is available through crowd sourcing, social media, and smart device interactions. This exponential growth in data has opened new opportunities but at the same challenged business organizations on four fronts – Volume, Velocity, Veracity and Variety. The techniques to bring this data together and organize them in a Big Data Analytics framework can lead to higher revenue (and customer service), lower costs (efficiency and optimization) and innovation (new business products).

Lunch

13:00 14:00
  • Travel Data and Smart Applications
  • How to use passenger counting data for funding
  • Demand and Travel Time Forecasting for Ride Sharing and Repositioning
  • Smart MMI – Context-Sensitive Travel Companion on Smart Public Displays in Public Transport
  • The use and impact of new technologies to procure data and measure mobility

Coffee break

15:00 15:30

Workshop 1 – How data-driven should your organisation be?

Based upon Gartner’s BI maturity model participants will rank their own company: how data driven is your organisation? How data driven does it need to be? How to get there?

Workshop 2: How to get from data to results?

Many operators struggle to optimize the impact of data. What should be done to get the max out of data? How to avoid failure? How to get a high ROI (Return on Investment)? In this session conditions for success will be discussed.

End of Day 1

17:30 17:30
