Public transport is at the heart of sustainable, inclusive, and liveable cities. Yet behind its essential role lies a persistent challenge: inefficiency.

From underutilised fleets and idle time to complex processes and untapped human potential, waste silently erodes service quality, financial sustainability, and public trust.

This UITP Academy online programme – From Waste to Flow: The 8 Wastes of Public Transport is designed to help public transport professionals recognise, analyse, and eliminate these hidden inefficiencies using Lean and Six Sigma principles, adapted specifically to the realities of urban mobility.

Grounded in the Eight Wastes framework (DOWNTIME) and aligned with ISO 13053 and ISO 29990, the programme bridges theory and practice through real-world public transport case studies from across regions and modes.

Participants will explore how waste manifests in planning, operations, maintenance, customer experience, and organisational culture — and, more importantly, how it can be transformed into value.

The programme goes beyond tools and processes. It places equal emphasis on people, leadership, and culture, recognising that sustainable improvement in public transport is achieved not only through data and technology, but through engaged teams and empowered staff.

Through interactive lectures, applied case studies, and peer exchange, participants will develop a structured mindset for continuous improvement and leave with practical insights that can be immediately applied within their own organisations.

Ultimately, this programme invites participants to see waste not as failure, but as feedback — and to move their organisations from inefficiency to flow, from compliance to excellence, and from isolated fixes to system-wide improvement.

What You Will Learn

  • Understanding the 8 wastes in public transport and how they appear in daily operations
  • Applying Lean & Six Sigma thinking to improve planning, operations, maintenance, and customer experience
  • Using data and KPIs (punctuality, reliability, occupancy, MTBF/MKBF) to spot inefficiencies and prioritise actions
  • Aligning service supply with real demand to improve productivity and reduce cost
  • Simplifying processes and passenger journeys (ticketing, information flows, interchanges)
  • Leveraging digitalisation and ITS to support smarter decisions and operational resilience
  • Improving asset performance through predictive / condition-based maintenance
  • Reducing disruptions and quality failures through standardisation and root-cause analysis
  • Building a culture of improvement by engaging teams and unlocking frontline ideas
  • Learning from real public transport case studies and best practices to create an actionable improvement plan

Who is it for?

  • Public transport managers, planners, and engineers working in operations, strategy, service planning, maintenance, and IT/innovation.
  • Performance, quality, and continuous improvement staff leading efficiency and service excellence initiatives.
  • Data analysts/scientists and modellers supporting operational decision-making and performance measurement.
  • Staff from public transport operators and authorities responsible for planning, implementing, and managing process improvement programmes.
  • Professionals from consultancies and solution providers supporting public transport operators on operational efficiency and customer experience.
