Public transport caters to the mobility needs of people, giving them the opportunity to access necessities such as employment, education, and health.

The need for travel is ever-growing and along with India’s economic growth, it is important to ensure that public transport continues to be the mainstay of mobility for users.

The Government of India has launched schemes such as Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicle (FAME-I and FAME-II) to shift towards electric vehicles.

Under the FAME-I scheme, the Government of India sanctioned 390 e-bus spanning across 11 cities under two different business models i.e., outright purchase and Gross Cost Contract.

Similarly, in the FAME-II scheme, approximately 3,500 e-buses are at different stages of tendering and implementation across the country.

UITP India has provided inputs to the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) in designing the financial incentives for electric buses (e-buses).

It has also produced multiple guidance documents for cities receiving subsidies such as model tender documents for e-bus procurement, reviewed e-bus procurement under the FAME scheme and developed a ‘Framework for performance evaluation of e-buses’.

Transitioning from diesel or CNG buses to electric buses requires a system-wide transformation in planning, procurement, financing, contracting, operations, and maintenance of vehicles.

Under a third-party funded project ‘Enabling mechanisms to advance Electric Buses in India’, UITP is working towards addressing four themes towards accelerating e-bus deployment in India:

Theme 1: Electrification of a longer-distance bus market.

Theme 2: Improving access to finance for e-buses.

Theme 3: Performance monitoring of e-buses to inform future procurements.

Theme 4: Capacity building of State Transport Undertakings (STUs) transitioning to e-bus fleets

Under theme 4 i.e., Capacity Building of STUs, UITP is organising a 1.5-day training programme on Planning, Procurement and Management of Electric Buses to build capacity on e-buses for key stakeholder groups.

The training is in partnership with the Association of State Road Transport Undertaking (ASRTU). The training will involve active engagement with government bus authorities, operators, global transport professionals, and other key stakeholders to enable accelerated deployment of e-buses in India.
