UITP believes that public transport can play a vital part in advancing road safety – and happily welcomed the opportunity to discuss these issues with His Royal Highness, Prince Michael of Kent.
His Royal Highness, as Patron of the Towards Zero Foundation, has worked to advance safety on roads across the world.
Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards are granted to various associations, groups and individuals across the world, who are advocating for better safety on our roads.
The annual recipients of the awards, UITP members Transport for London and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore have been previous recipients, all work towards the same goal: reducing unnecessary deaths and the tragic loss of life.
During the ITF Summit (Leipzig, Germany 23-25 May) our Secretary General Mohamed Mezghani had the opportunity to meet with His Royal Highness to discuss how UITP and Prince Michael of Kent’s foundation can work together on these issues through mutual collaboration.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet with His Royal Highness to discuss these important issues and to inform him that UITP believes public transport can play a leading part in road safety. I also had the pleasure to bring our #PT4ME campaign with the World Bank to Prince Michael’s attention. UITP’s approach to road safety is to avoid personal motorised transport, shift to safer modes, and improve urban space design and operations. I hope that UITP and the Towards Zero Foundation will be able to work together going forward on advancing road safety”, said Mohamed Mezghani, UITP Secretary General.
His Royal Highness also delivered the ITF Summit 2018 keynote speech during the Opening Session, where he addressed road safety and the importance of sectoral collaboration, to the gathered audience of public transport figures.
“It was a pleasure to meet with Mr. Mohamed Mezghani, the Secretary General of UITP, and his team to discuss how the Towards Zero Foundation can work with associations such as UITP to advance road safety. I believe that public transport can play a vital role in assuring our roads are safer and I look forward to hearing more about their work”, said His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent.
