The Secretary General-Elect of UITP, Mohamed Mezghani, and Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)’s Deputy Secretary General Amb. Ihab Fahmy, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding strengthening cooperation between the two organisations on 9 November 2017.

Bringing together the 28 EU Member States and 15 countries from the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean, UfM is an international organisation that works to enhance regional cooperation and dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Bilateral cooperation to help meet the Sustainable Development Goals

The agreement aims at strengthening mutual cooperation in the pursuit of regional and international initiatives to achieve objectives in the fields of transport and urban development.

These objectives will be met by, among others, developing and implementing a work plan which will include the organisation of joint activities, trainings and capacity building programmes, as well as the development of joint initiatives to raise awareness of the benefits of sustainable transport among the youth of the population.

UITP will also participate in the new UfM Regional Platform on Sustainable Urban Development, which was also launched on 9 November 2017, and in two project committees to provide advisory services, studies and concept notes.

Both organisations are expecting that these cooperation activities will contribute to achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals in the Mediterranean region.
