This month on uitp.org, we’ve decided to focus on the issue of security on public transport.

What do we talk about when we talk about security on public transport?

Good question. Often, when people think of security on public transport networks, they tend to think of terrorism, but that’s only one part of it. Here at UITP, when we talk about security on networks, a key focus is the day-to-day operation of service and the efforts to make public transport an attractive, pleasant and secure experience for everyone.

In 2007, the Russian city of Sochi was chosen by the International Olympic Committee to be the host of the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Sochi, a popular summertime resort located on the Black Sea, and the nearby mountain resort of Krasnaya Polyana, hosted the event from 7 – 23 February 2014. Apart from the gleaming new hotels and stadiums built to host the throngs of spectators, sport stars and world media, public transport infrastructure of this popular seaside resort town was also given a mega makeover.

Local public transport trends in the European Union

UITP is launching its first annual publication that tracks and analyses public transport demand trends in the EU Member States. This UITP statistics publication, the first in a coming series, provides detailed figures by country and the breakdown of journeys by public transport mode in urban and suburban areas. It’s the first comprehensive effort to gather and analyse local public transport ridership data by country in the whole of the EU.

June is upon us, the sun is out and here at UITP we have one thing on our minds: big events! With so many large gatherings taking place all over the world, the public transport sector has got its work cut out for it. From the World Cup in Brazil to the plethora of summer festivals and sports events, public transport is mobilising to move the masses.

Taxis: Sustainable mass transit needs sustainable micro transit

Share & Print:

Successful cities depend on efficient public transport working in conjunction with other sustainable travel options. Taxi services are an individual, mostly door-to-door micro transit service, offered to the public predominantly at a local level. By the very nature of their services, taxis are an integral element in the multimodal mobility chain.
