Improving public transport’s response to SDGs – A joint meeting between the UITP Sustainable Development Committee and the UITP Latin America Sustainability platform

Public transport is key in the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the framework of the Agenda 2030 and Paris Agreement. Public transport is contributing positively to 14 out of 17 SDGs by improving the lives of people, guaranteeing a healthy planet and stimulating technological, economic and societal progress. On the other hand, the sector as any human activity also produces negative externalities and is actively working on reducing these impacts on the planet and societies. To enhance public transport’s positive impact and limit negative externalities, developing a sustainability approach integrated in the strategy of the organisation is essential in improving public transport around the world.

This meeting is organised in the framework of the 39th UITP Sustainable Development Committee and with the UITP Latin America Sustainability platform in Sao Paulo. It aims at fostering experience-sharing on how to enhance the positive contribution of public transport in the achievement of SDGs, working towards making the sector and our societies more sustainable.
