The Dakar BRT, a zero-emission transport project, improves mobility on the city’s busiest corridor. With 121 e-buses, smart operations and sustainable infrastructure, it cuts travel time by 50%, reduces CO₂ and creates 1000 local jobs, 45% for women.

About this Project

The Dakar BRT project tackles major urban mobility challenges, including severe congestion, long commutes, high emissions, and inadequate public transport.

Also The metropolis of Dakar is experiencing rapid urbanization. By introducing an efficient, zero-emission transit system, it reduces travel time along Dakar’s busiest corridor from 90 to 45 minutes.

The project aims to ensure financial sustainability and affordability through a revenue-sharing model and tax incentives for green technology. It also promotes gender inclusion, with 45% of bus drivers being women.

Looking ahead, Dakar is expanding its green transit network with a second BRT line, five new mass transit lines, and integrated multimodal hubs.

Key Highlights

The Dakar BRT is a game-changer in sustainable mobility. Zero-Emission Transport: Fully electric buses cut CO₂ emissions by 59,000 tonnes/year, reducing pollution and improving air quality while promoting green urban development.

Smart Mobility Center: A high-tech control hub enables real-time traffic monitoring, predictive maintenance, and optimized fleet management, enhancing efficiency and passenger experience. Gender Inclusion: 45% of bus drivers are women, setting a new standard for workforce diversity.

Multimodal Integration: With 15 multimodal hubs and 175 km of cycle paths, the project fosters seamless, eco-friendly mobility and better city connectivity, ensuring a greener future for Dakar.

Facts & Figures

  • The BRT pilot line is designed to carry up to 300,000 passengers a day on eighteen (18) km route serving the most densely populated and congested areas of Dakar, while halving journey times (from 1.5 hours to forty-five 45 minutes).
  • Specifically addressing 12 Sustainable Development Goals.
  • A considerable social, economic and environmental impact. The proportion of the population with access to the city centre in less than an hour will be increased by 12%.
  • 1,000 direct jobs will be created, with a target of at least thirty five percent (35%) for women.
  • A reduction in CO² emissions of around 59,000 tonnes per year.
