With 10 million spectators expected to attend the Paris 2024 Games in the Île-de-France Region, it was a major challenge to provide a multilingual application to ensure efficient public transport to the 25 competition venues and avoid overcrowding.

About this Project

The app aimed at:

  • ensuring an easy wayfinding for Games spectators to reach the objective of 100 % spectators coming by public transport or active modes
  • managing the flows according to the venues public transport plans, which required to distribute spectators among selected routes – some much longer than the shortest ones – to respect capacity constraints in vehicles and stations.

It implied:

  • a partnership design with the Game organising committee: use of look the Games and integration of deep links to facilitate a swift move from the Olympics app to the IDFM transport app
  • the development of innovative route planner features, to only display routes included in the transport plans and recommend for spectator a “Paris 2024 journey”.

Key Highlights

Our regular route planner was amended for journeys to the Games venues:

  • Avoidance of regular bus lines as last part of trips to venues to avoid overcrowding
  • Integration of penalties to select the stations of the transports plans even if they were far away from venues
  • Last walking path lengths between stations and venues adjusted to reach a target distribution among routes when applied to a hypothesis of the distribution of origins of spectators in a 1,800 zonal split of the region.

127 set of parameters and 40 in case of major service disruptions were estimated.

The app was available in French, English and translated by controlled AI in German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
