Depot shunting. Remote driving. Driverless trams in city traffic. FP2-R2DATO, one of the flagship projects of Europe’s Rail, looked at how far automation can realistically go for tram and light rail, and where it needs to start.
Working through the UITP R2DATO Working Group, UITP brought the operator perspective into the project: the use cases that matter in daily operations, the technologies behind them, and the Oslo demonstrator where they are being tested. The result is a progressive path that begins in depots and controlled areas rather than a single leap to driverless operation in mixed traffic.
