An estimated 854,000 school students across the country rely on dedicated school buses for daily transport. This project introduces an integrated model that connects public bus networks with school transportation systems — promoting early adoption of public transport habits while maximizing ..

About this Project

One of the most significant challenges in advancing public transportation is the prevailing cultural habits, which have been extensively analyzed to identify that the foundation of change lies in childhood and adolescence.

Consequently, this initiative aims to cultivate a culture of public transport starting at the school level, fostering early adoption and shaping long-term behavioral patterns.

By promoting this approach, the project reinforces the need for coordinated efforts, consolidated resources, and aligned funding mechanisms.

Implemented in multiple phases, the initiative enjoys robust support from key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the Royal Oman Police, and Muscat Municipality, offering a unique, pioneering, and scalable model for sustainable urban mobility.

Key Highlights

This initiative is implemented without requiring significant initial investment by leveraging the existing fleet and adjusting portions of the routes to align with school stops during designated hours.

This approach has enabled the provision of a substantial number of school buses during the trial phase, enhancing service quality and accommodating higher-than-expected student ridership.

Beyond serving students, the initiative has extended its benefits to families, with buses available for shared use in the evenings, thereby fostering broader community engagement and maximizing fleet utilization.

Facts & Figures

  • To evaluate the success of the pilot initiative, clear performance standards were established and measured across several indicators.
  • Notably, passenger occupancy on Route No. 10 increased by 26%, and six dedicated school buses were deployed, contributing to a direct cost reduction of over 18% per month.
  • Additionally, the initiative led to an estimated reduction of 6.3 tons of carbon emissions annually—a significant environmental impact at the pilot stage.
  • Beyond these measurable outcomes, the initiative enhanced accessibility and affordability for students and their families by providing a safe, reliable, and integrated mobility solution.
  • The pilot also contributed to a reduction in private vehicle trips during peak hours, helping to alleviate traffic congestion around schools.
  • Furthermore, it demonstrated the potential for optimizing public transport assets through service integration, while supporting broader sustainability objectives and encouraging a gradual shift towards shared mobility solutions.
