Legal Tender of Euro Banknotes and Coins: UITP’s Priorities for Public Transport
UITP recognises the importance of keeping cash payments accessible, particularly for vulnerable passengers and during electronic payment disruptions. At the same time, the growing use of cashless payments means operators need to continue developing modern payment solutions.
A balanced approach is therefore needed, combining financial inclusion with operational efficiency, safety and innovation.
As the EU discusses new regulation on the legal tender of euro banknotes and coins, UITP is calling on EU co-legislators to:
- Maintain the exemption for unmanned points of sale
- Allow cash payments at designated locations
- Avoid further requirements, which could increase costs and expose staff to security risks from handling and transporting cash.
