The Europe Forum brings together public transport professionals from across the sector, this event will focus on some of the main European topics currently on the table, including workforce shortage and skills gap, automated shared mobility and sustainability.

Alongside the sessions, a dedicated project showcase area will give participants a closer look at research and innovation initiatives, recent results and ideas emerging across the sector.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will gain insight into current EU policy discussions in public transport, discover how research and innovation projects are addressing sector challenges, and hear practical examples linked to automated shared mobility, digitalisation, data for sustainable cities and the work of UITP groups and committees.

Who is it for?

This event is aimed at professionals working in EU affairs, policy, and R&I projects in public transport.

It is particularly relevant for staff from authorities, operators, industry and UITP member organisations who want to stay closely connected to current EU topics and exchange views with others in the sector.

As cities and transport stakeholders become increasingly connected through global networks like UITP, membership is no longer just about access, it is about actively leveraging opportunities to drive impact, innovation, and collaboration.

UITP brings together a worldwide community of public transport professionals, offering access to knowledge, networks, policy influence, and capacity building opportunities that support both strategic and operational goals.

In this session, we will guide participants through how to fully unlock the value of UITP membership. With a particular focus on the newly established UITP Europe Unit, designed to better serve European members and respond to their specific needs, the session will highlight practical ways to engage more effectively with the network.

Participants will gain insights into how to strengthen internal capabilities and visibility, build meaningful international partnerships, and make the most of UITP’s platforms to support their organisation’s ambitions and contribute to the future of sustainable urban mobility.

Panel Discussion

Local public transport is at the heart of Europe’s climate, mobility, accessibility and social inclusion objectives. Yet operators and authorities across the EU are facing a growing workforce challenge: attracting, training and retaining the people needed to keep services running today while preparing for the systems of tomorrow.

The shortage is not limited to drivers. It also affects maintenance staff, technicians, engineers, planners, operational managers, customer-facing teams, IT and digital specialists, safety staff and project delivery teams. These pressures are intensified by demographic change, competition with other sectors, changing worker expectations, cost pressures, safety concerns, new skills requirements and the need to deliver the green and digital transition.

This panel will bring together perspectives from UITP, EU institutions, operators and innovation actors to discuss the causes and consequences of workforce shortages in local public transport, as well as possible solutions. The discussion will also consider the role of past and current EU legislative and policy actions, market dynamics, social dialogue and sectoral trends.

Speakers

  • Moderator: Sónia PÁSCOA, Board Member, Metropolitano de Lisboa & Vice-Chair of UITP EU Committee
  • Gabrielle COSTIGAN, CEO, Global Rail Group & Vice-Chair of UITP Europe Division
  • Andy LORD, Commissioner, Transport for London

This session brings together representatives from DG MOVE, DG CONNECT, DG RTD and CINEA to present EU activities linked to innovation in urban mobility, public transport and shared mobility.

It will cover EU policies and initiatives promoting transport innovation in the fields of mobility and digitalisation, as well as research opportunities and funding instruments that support implementation and deployment.

The session will look at how these tools can help cities, operators and mobility stakeholders develop cleaner, smarter and more effective mobility systems.

Each project will have its own stand, where you can meet the project representatives, ask questions, and learn more about their work. From automated mobility and decarbonisation to metro systems, innovation, safety, and electric bus solutions, this is a chance to explore how UITP projects are helping advance sustainable urban mobility.

As cities, organisations and authorities invest in new initiatives and projects such as GOLIA, CLEVER, UPPER or NAPCORE to improve data, the potential for more sustainable urban mobility continues to grow.

Better access to diverse and higher-quality data enables transport authorities and operators to improve decision-making, identify issues more quickly, adapt services in real time, and better respond to mobility needs.

This session will explore how data support strategic and policy objectives to build smarter and more sustainable cities.

Speakers

  • Moderator: Karine SBIRRAZZUOLI, Senior Director – Knowledge & Innovation, UITP
  • Rebecca BISSELL, Director Technology Product & Operations, Transport for London
  • Grégory MALET, CSR Director, RATP Dev

Public transport is primed to lead the deployment of automated mobility technology in Europe. Moving from limited pilots to large scale deployment is a key goal for decision makers and the public transport sector. However, this step change will require specific policy support to bring technology to market, to facilitate new uses cases and operating models, and to support workforce transition to new roles. This session will consider outcomes from European projects, developments in UITP Committees and Working Groups and input from European policymakers on what support is needed to deliver this transition.
