Since Feb 2025, Mexicable allows payments via credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and MOVIMEX cards, removing the need for transit-specific cards or cash. This open-loop system makes commuting seamless, inclusive, and convenient, integrating cable cars with Mexico City’s Metro and Metrobus

About this Project

Before recent upgrades, Mexicable users encountered significant payment and accessibility challenges. Traditional transit systems relied on pre-paid cards or cash, creating barriers for daily commuters and visitors unfamiliar with local payment methods.

This system made spontaneous travel difficult and excluded users without transit cards. Vulnerable populations, including seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income riders, lacked integrated financial solutions, limiting their mobility options.

The absence of digital and contactless payment methods reduced convenience, slowed boarding, and hindered seamless transfers across transportation networks. These limitations highlighted the need for modernization.

By addressing these gaps, Mexicable can enhance inclusivity, simplify fare payment, and ensure that all users, regardless of technological familiarity or financial status, can access reliable, efficient, and convenient public transportation.

Key Highlights

The Mexicable payment system innovates by offering open-loop interoperability, accepting all major payment networks and reducing user friction. It seamlessly combines physical cards, mobile wallets, and traditional payments, accommodating all demographics.

MOVIMEX cards promote financial inclusion, providing banking services while offering transit benefits. Integrated across Mexicable, Metro, and Metrobus, it creates a unified mobility network.

NFC contactless payments and traditional readers demonstrate technological sophistication, enhancing convenience and accessibility for all users.
