Light rail and tram (LRT) systems are a pillar of urban mobility, providing the backbone of a network or a valuable addition to metros.
Cities all over the world host LRT networks, though it is most important to cities across Europe and Eurasia, home to over 80% of LRT ridership. Today, light rail is experiencing a renaissance, with some 400 systems in operation worldwide.
LRT has always been key to UITP – founded in 1885 as an association of tram operators. Then and now, UITP brings together global members to lead research and share knowledge. From modernisation to automation and more, UITP supports the LRT sector to advance our shared mission of sustainable mobility.
UITP coordinates and collaborates with operators, authorities, industry, and international organisations on a number of research projects.
