The aim of this course is to provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of what is at stake in building and maintaining travel information and wayfinding systems focused on user needs and expectations.

The course will introduce a practical toolbox of methods needed to design and deliver efficient and effective travel information throughout public transport user journeys.

These methods are organized into five main categories: space-related information, time-related information, navigation and orientation, user behavior, and service-disruption mitigation.

The course emphasizes improving existing travel information and wayfinding systems to ensure relevance in real-world environments. Participants will also engage in a hands-on workshop to apply the concepts learned.

What You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Build an information-design approach tailored to the specific characteristics and constraints of their network
  • Create intuitive, updatable passenger information systems across both digital and physical channels
  • Design systems that adapt to evolving urban, social, and cultural contexts
  • Develop journey information that is truly human-centred and relevant to real-world use
  • This training course will also enable participants to:
  • Make informed decisions on information-design strategies
  • Seamlessly integrate static and real-time dynamic information into user journeys
  • Build a robust information-design system aligned with network needs
  • Manage service disruptions more effectively
  • Compare, benchmark, and evaluate information and wayfinding systems against international best practices

Who is it for?

  • In-house information designers, marketers, communicators, project managers, engineers, and other professionals seeking to strengthen their knowledge of passenger information design.
  • Professionals working in passenger information and customer-service departments and teams.
  • Staff from authorities and operators looking to improve passenger information provision in their networks.
  • Staff from industry worldwide involved in the development and adoption of passenger-information technology and design.
  • Professionals interested in gaining a broader international perspective on passenger-information design and learning from global best practices.
  • Note: This course is suitable for participants who are fluent in English or have a high level of English proficiency.

Programme

Welcome & Introduction to the Course

09:00 09:30
Session 1
  • What are we (still) missing in 2025 regarding information design and delivery?
  • What does “putting the user at the centre” really mean?
  • What should be done to deliver information better via physical and digital means?
  • Why are travel information and wayfinding essential components of passenger experience, service marketing, and even service/network branding?

Break

11:00 11:30
Session 2
  • What does it take to meet travel-information needs?
  • What are the key vocabulary and identification components required?
  • Why are personality, governance, and culture so important to information design, provision, and maintenance?

In this session, you will see multiple examples of design and implementation and explore the transition from passenger information to urban navigation.

Lunch

Session 3

Break

15:00 15:30
Session 4

“Accessibility is not about disability: it drives a better quality of use for everyone.”

In this session, you’ll develop an understanding of the many levels of perception that humans use to gather, interpret, and act upon information as they move through the built environment. These levels are relevant for everyone, and designers must address them simultaneously and appropriately.

You will focus on:

  • How the environment impacts perception and how we perceive our surroundings
  • Multi-sensory information: colour, contrast, touch, and sound

End of Day 1
