Completed Research Projects
Enabling Mechanisms to Advance Electric Buses in India, 2021-2022
With a vision to support 10% transition of the existing bus fleet in India to electric by 2025, the project aimed to carry out various policy advocacy, financing, and capacity-building activities to advance e-buses in India.
The project focused on the following four key themes:
- Electrification of longer distance bus market
- Improving access to finance for e-buses
- Performance monitoring of e-buses to inform future procurements
- Capacity building of State Transport Undertakings (STUs) transitioning to e-bus fleets
Introduction and scaling up electric buses in hilly states of India
The project ‘Towards climate-responsive and low-carbon development: Addressing the critical urban issues in residential and transport sector in Uttarakhand’ is part of National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) partnered with UITP India to facilitate the roll out of electric buses in Uttarakhand state.
The objective of the project is to:
(a) Support in the decision making to concerned authority in Uttarakhand regarding deployment of electric buses for public transport on inter-city routes
(b) Support in building institutional capacity of relevant state actors in Uttarakhand regarding implementation of electric mobility of public bus transport in the state.
Roadmap for transition to soot free and zero emission buses in Bangalore, 2018-2022
In collaboration with the International Council of Clean Transportation (ICCT), UITP India is engaged in supporting Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) with implementation and scale up of e-buses under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME II) scheme launched by Government of India.
The project also includes compiling and publishing e-bus deployment progress across India.

Study with World Bank on Electric Mobility, 2020
UITP India initiated a project with World Bank Group on electric mobility.
UITP India participated in the two-stage request for proposal (RFP) with Steer Davies Gleave India Pvt Ltd (Steer Group) as the lead. The project included market assessment, business models and action plan for electric mobility for selected Indian states.
The project is in partnership with Steer Group, and UITP India managed the public transportation component in the exhaustive research project spanning about 6 months.
Ongoing Research Projects
Enabling Mechanisms to Advance Low Emission Zones in India
- International case study and peer review – Compilation of best practices and discussion with city authorities on six selected cities
- Narrative building and stakeholder consultation in Indian cities
- LEZ selection and supporting the implementation of pilots – Identification of probable LEZ zones in the selected cities, followed by traffic studies and preparing a policy brief document
Advancing Electric Buses in India
- National level support on supply improvement of electric buses in India – Enabling discussion between Indian states and international E-bus OEMs for e-bus supply improvement in India
- Technical support to three Indian cities for e-bus adoption – Providing technical assistance in operational and financial analysis for cities procuring electric buses and conducting capacity building training programmes.
