UITP Australia and New Zealand’s Behind the Wheel spotlight interview series continues with Stacey van der Putten, Director Public Transport and Active Modes at Auckland Transport. Stacey is a dynamic and purpose-driven senior leader with broad experience across housing, healthcare, construction, and defence. A Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand, she brings strategic insight and operational depth to every role she takes on.

Known for her lateral thinking and calm problem-solving under pressure, Stacey is a natural trouble-shooter who thrives on developing people and building inclusive, high-performing teams. She creates environments where individuals feel not only engaged, but genuinely valued — fostering a culture of trust, curiosity, and continuous growth.

Stacey is a passionate advocate for harnessing the talent and enthusiasm already present in the sector, and believes the public sector must do more to nurture curiosity and unlock innovation to solve tomorrow’s challenges. She sees public transport not as a cost, but as a lifeline — connecting workers to jobs, students to schools, and families to each other.

She draws energy from movement and music, often finding clarity during her daily walking commutes. Her belief in the power of public transport to shape more connected, equitable cities keeps her motivated and grounded. Whether leading change or mentoring others, Stacey brings a strong sense of purpose, positivity, and community to everything she does — always encouraging collaboration, connection, and a shared commitment to progress.

#1 What is one word that describes you?

Driven.

#2 What is a stress buster for you?

Exercise, can be a walk, run, gym or hike in the mountains

#3 Which part of your daily routine do you look forward to?

I have to admit, my morning and evening commute is my favourite part of the day — it’s a combo deal for me: earphones on, music playing, walking for exercise, and either planning my day ahead or reflecting on the one just gone.

#4 What keeps you motivated?

Working in public transport is like being on a treadmill, always running, never arriving. You are always evolving, growing and moving to the beat of the city and I absolutely believe that I can make a positive difference, to our city, our people, friends and family.

#5 What is one pro advice that you would like to give to maintain work-life balance?

Not a fan of this saying. Fact is, at times home and family require more of your attention, and sometimes work does — the key thing is ensuring that what you do for work brings both professional and personal satisfaction, so when it does require a bit more of you, the motivation stays high and you can aim to be 100% present where you are, at work or at home.

#6 What is one change that you would like to see in the society in the near future?

That we look out for our neighbours and strengthen our connections within the community.

#7 What is your motto of keeping the morale of your team high?

Not sure it is a motto as such, but always encourage curiosity – this is how we solve problems and also helps people grow.
