From career journeys and leadership insights to personal reflections and bold ideas—directly from the voices shaping the future of mobility. UITP Australia and New Zealand launched Behind the Wheel, a spotlight interview series featuring leading voices from the ANZ public transport sector.

Continuing the series after Josh Murray who shared his insights and inspiration in the previous edition, we’re pleased to introduce Vincent Destot, CEO of Yarra Tram for this edition.

#1 What inspired you to pursue a career in the public‑transport sector?

I’m inspired by the power of public transport to make a real, positive impact on both communities and the environment – we call it “positive mobility”.

Public transport offers a sustainable alternative to cars, reduces emissions, and connects people to opportunities.

Growing up in the mountains in France, I felt very connected to the environment and passionate about making a positive difference. Being part of the Yarra Trams team allows me to contribute to a cleaner, more accessible Melbourne, which is incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

#2 What part of your daily routine do you look forward to?

Most mornings I start my day in Port Melbourne by catching the tram as a passenger. It’s a good reminder of what our network is about: people.

On the 109 I’ll often have a quick word with a driver from Kew depot. Sometimes I’ll be checked by Authorised Officers from Southbank. And in the city, I’ll always stop to say hello to our Customer Service Employees.

These everyday interactions show me the effort and care our teams put into keeping Melbourne moving. It’s a straightforward but powerful reminder that behind every service are the people who make it possible.

#3 What role does leadership play in driving innovation and sustainability within public transport operations?

Leadership plays a crucial role in driving innovation and sustainability in public transport.

At Yarra Trams, it’s about setting a clear vision, empowering teams to explore new ideas, and fostering a culture that embraces change.

Strong leadership ensures we prioritise sustainable practices while delivering efficient, reliable services.

By inspiring collaboration and investing in technology, we can create smarter, greener transport solutions that benefit our communities and the environment for generations to come.

#4 What is your definition of success?

My motto is “people first”. To me, success is creating a great workplace where employees feel valued, empowered, safe and motivated, because when our people thrive, it flows through to delivering exceptional experiences for our passengers and stronger, more connected communities.

#5 What keeps you motivated?

Knowing that every decision we make improves the daily lives of thousands of people is what keeps me motivated. Seeing our team’s dedication and the positive impact of our work inspires me to keep pushing forward and looking for opportunities to continuously improve.

#6 What’s one lesson you’ve learned in your career that you wish more people in the public transport sector understood?

One key lesson I’ve learned is that meaningful collaboration across teams and stakeholders is essential. Public transport thrives when everyone works together openly and creatively. Breaking down silos leads to smarter solutions and better outcomes for passengers and communities.
