Joint Statement: Vehicle Operational Data Access in Public Transport
Summary
With the Digital Omnibus package currently under discussion, UITP, together with five other European organisations, has signed a joint statement calling on EU policymakers and decision-makers to protect public transport operators’ and authorities’ right to access their own data.
The coalition fully supports preserving Europe’s leadership on fair and effective access to connected product data. The Data Act (Regulation (EU) 2023/2854) grants operators the right to access data generated by the connected products they use. This data is essential for operating electric and hydrogen fleets, enabling predictive maintenance, battery health monitoring and AI-driven energy optimisation.
The Digital Omnibus will determine whether this right can be enforced in practice or undermined. As the United States moves towards enforceable federal right-to-repair legislation for buses and coaches, now is not the time for Europe to weaken the framework it pioneered.
