UITP has proudly supported the advancement of public transport alongside our members across the Middle East and North Africa since the mid-1990s. In 2005, we strengthened that commitment by opening a dedicated UITP MENA Regional Office in Dubai, bringing together the entire public transport supply chain in the region. The office offers our members a powerful platform to connect, collaborate, and make their voices heard on the global stage.
Today, the MENA region is undergoing a clear and exciting shift towards more sustainable urban mobility, backed by major investments and a growing demand for smart public transport solutions. We’re proud to work alongside regional leaders to shape this future together.
This journey now continues with Hashem Alhendawi stepping into the role of Head of UITP MENA. With more than 14 years of experience in business development, strategy, and operations – and a deep connection to the region – Hashem brings both vision and momentum to the role.
Based in Dubai for the past 12 years, Hashem has been a key contributor to UITP’s regional activities for the last three years, particularly through his involvement in the MENA Bus Group and the Bus Electrification Sub-Working Group. A familiar and trusted figure in our community, he combines strategic insight with an energetic, hands-on leadership style.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead UITP’s work in the MENA region. The region is going through important changes in how we think about mobility and the role of public transport in people’s lives. I am looking forward to working closely with our members to better understand their needs, share ideas, and support efforts that make public transport more accessible, sustainable, and more impactful across our cities.
In his new role, Hashem will lead all aspects of the UITP MENA office operations, from growing member engagement and developing partnerships to strengthening ties with key industry and government stakeholders.
His arrival comes at a particularly exciting time for the region, as the UITP Summit returns to Dubai in April 2026 for the first time in 15 years. Under the banner of ‘Destination Dubai’, the Summit will bring together global leaders, innovators, and policymakers to shape the next chapter in public transport.
Welcome Hashem!
