What’s in this publication?

Rail breaks threaten metro safety and service continuity. This study analyses existing technical solutions and maintenance practices for early detection and prevention, and evaluate the role of Track Circuits (TCs) in this context.

Key metrics such as the frequency, causes, and seasonal patterns of rail breaks are examined, together with the effectiveness of TCs in detecting these failures. Alternative rail break detection technologies are also investigated.

Contents:

  • Assessment of rail break frequency, causes and detection practices
  • Evaluation of track circuit performance in rail break detection
