Ensuring the Longevity and Safety of Tunnel Assets

The operation of an underground metro network implies the passage of vehicles through tunnels, which are often made of concrete. It is necessary to regularly assess the condition of these tunnels, in order to be able to make preventive and/or curative corrections and to ensure the safety and durability of the structure.

The objective of this study, led by STM Montreal, is to identify the methods and means used to manage and assess the conditions of tunnels, important assets of a metro network.

A survey was conducted among Fixed Installations Platform members from cities such as Montreal, Hamburg, and Vienna. This survey formed the basis of the study’s findings and conclusions.

The report underscores the importance of periodic inspections but highlights the need for more standardised practices across different networks to enhance tunnel asset management.

Key Findings

  • Inspection Practices: All surveyed networks conduct tunnel inspections, predominantly outside of operating hours, with varying frequencies.
  • Standards and Methods: No standardised inspection practices exist; methods range from visual and manual inspections to the use of advanced equipment like thermal cameras and laser scanners.
  • Common Issues: The most frequently observed damages include cracks and water leaks.
