How to upgrade paratransit

Digitalisation and the value of data

Paratransit is a sector characterised by its complexity, and a large part of this complexity comes from a near-total dearth of data.

But if we overcome this challenge, data could enable paratransit to enhance its services, improve operational efficiency, and upgrade urban mobility in cities and towns across the Global South. As a complex subject, collecting paratransit data requires a holistic strategy which takes into account the different layers of data needed to correctly identify how the sector is structured – and how it can be improved.

The primary objective of this Policy Brief is to underscore the significant role that data could play in enhancing the paratransit sector’s capabilities and its broader impact on urban mobility. The paper not only looks at opportunities that technology provides, but it also identifies gaps and challenges in data collection.
