Introduction
Recent devastating earthquakes in Peru, Japan, Colombia and Venezuela have highlighted the need to strengthen the preparedness and resilience of public transport systems in the face of natural disasters.
Public transport networks are critical to the functioning of cities, particularly during and after a disaster. Ensuring that transport systems can withstand disruption, respond effectively, maintain essential services and recover rapidly is therefore a key element of urban resilience.
UITP and its Members have significant international expertise, practical experience on emergency preparedness, crisis management and business continuity. Lessons from previous major events, including the earthquakes in Türkiye and Hurricane Sandy, provide valuable insights into how public transport authorities and operators can prepare for and manage extreme disruptions.
This international webinar will bring together public transport authorities, operators and experts from different regions to share practical experiences and lessons learned from earthquakes. Speakers from Mexico, Turkey and Colombia will explore how public transport organisations can strengthen preparedness, coordinate their response, maintain business continuity and accelerate recovery following a major natural disaster.
With simultaneous interpretationin English and Spanish, the webinar will provide an opportunity for UITP Members to exchange knowledge, discuss practical challenges and identify approaches that can be adapted to different local contexts.
