UITP celebrates the successful conclusion of the EU-funded AI4CCAM project, which came to an end earlier this year after three years of intensive research, collaboration and innovation in the field of connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM). 

Launched in January 2023, AI4CCAM brought UITP together with a diverse consortium of transport operators, industry partners, research organisations, and public authorities under a united objective: to address one of the most pressing challenges in automated mobility, namely, how to ensure that artificial intelligence systems are not only effective, but also safe, transparent, and trusted by society.

Throughout the project’s lifetime, AI4CCAM focused on building a bridge between technological advancement and societal expectations, with a strong emphasis on the needs of public transport systems and vulnerable road users (hereinafter referred to as VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists. 

Over the course of the project, AI4CCAM delivered a comprehensive set of tools and methodologies aimed at enhancing the safety, predictability, and acceptance of automated mobility solutions. Some of its key contributions include advanced simulation frameworks and digital twin environments, which enable testing in complex and realistic scenarios.

Another landmark innovation was the development of explainable AI models that improve transparency and traceability in automated decision-making. Moreover, the project made important progress in areas such as human trajectory prediction, scene understanding, and uncertainty detection, all of which are essential for ensuring safe interactions between automated vehicles and their surrounding environment, including VRUs.

At the same time, AI4CCAM addressed critical cross-cutting issues including data privacy, cybersecurity, and the resilience of connected systems, which are fundamental to automated mobility. 

The project’s achievements were perhaps most prominently showcased during its final Stakeholder Forum and Final Event, held over two days in November 2025 at Autoworld, Brussels.

The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, transport operators, researchers, and industry representatives, creating a unique platform for dialogue between technical experts and the broader mobility community. 

Discussions highlighted the importance of transparent and traceable AI systems, the need for robust testing environments that reflect real-world complexity, and the continued role of human oversight in automated mobility.

A salient topic was also user acceptance and public trust, with participants underlining the importance of clear communication, inclusive design, and meaningful engagement with citizens. 

From UITP’s perspective, AI4CCAM represents an important step forward in aligning cutting-edge technological innovation with the operational realities and values of public transport. Through AI-based scenarios including VRUs such as pedestrians and cyclists, the project has demonstrated that the successful deployment of automated mobility solutions depends not only on technological performance, but also on acceptance through the ability to build trust by responding to societal needs such as accessibility. 

UITP has fed the project with contributions from its members involved at the occasion of cooperation and exchange activities and events (e.g. IT-Trans 2024 Stakeholder Forum, UITP Cybersecurity committee and AI working group meeting 2024). UITP also facilitated synergies with other HORIZON programs such as the SHOW and ULTIMO projects and encouraged CCAM applications in relation with user acceptance, LLM (Learning Language Models) scenario conversion and cybersecurity requirements for public transport. 

Now that the project has concluded, its results provide a strong foundation for future developments in automated mobility across Europe. The knowledge generated, the tools developed, and the partnerships established will continue to support the transition towards safe, inclusive, and sustainable mobility systems powered by trustworthy artificial intelligence.
