This complimentary training programme is delivered as part of the eBRT2030 project, a pioneering initiative advancing the future of sustainable urban mobility.

eBRT2030 is driving the development of the next generation of electric Bus Rapid Transit (eBRT) systems through innovative, economically viable solutions enriched with state-of-the-art automation and connectivity.

Designed to demonstrate the real-world applicability of advanced eBRT systems across diverse urban environments, the project represents a significant milestone in electric mobility, and this training offers valuable insights for professionals looking to design, upgrade, or implement new BRT systems.

By 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas, amounting to 6.8 billion people. As a consequence, urban passenger transport is projected to grow by 60-70% by 2050, which means a growth in traffic. Africa and Asia will see the largest increase in urban populations.

By 2030, Africa will have 41 megacities, and the continent is projected to double its population by 2050, reaching 2.5 billion. One out of two Africans will live in a city.

Most of the growth in the African urban population will occur in small cities. Rapid urbanisation will be a big matter for cities. One of the big challenges is providing mobility to those living in emerging cities. Quick response and action are key to cover daily mobility needs and, of course, to fight congestion.

In many cities, the Bus Rapid Transit System, BRT, is offered as an easy and quick solution for moving passengers. In this training, decision criteria behind the scenes and how to implement and operate the BRT system successfully will be learned.

What You Will Learn

  • Broaden your knowledge and perspective on BRT by learning and sharing experiences with professional leaders
  • Learn how to make design and manage BRT & e-BRT operations more efficiently
  • Understand the impact of new technology and software to get more value out of a BRT System
  • Learn from best practices from all around the world: showcases from local operators, authorities, and the industry

Who is it for?

  • Professionals working for transport authorities and operators
  • Other employees with particular interest in BRT Investments
  • Staff from the industry interested in getting an insight into the planning and operations of bus services
  • The course is suitable for participants from companies worldwide

Programme

Welcome & Introduction to the Course & eBRT2030 project Expectation Analysis

09:00 10:00
Session 1

BRT with its high capacity compared to conventional bus system and ease of implementation compared to light rail system makes it sustainable and reliable solution in providing high-capacity public transport system.

  • Definition and components of a BRT system
  • History and evolution of BRT globally
  • Benefits of a BRT
  • Justification of a BRT project
  • BRT system concepts

Break

11:00 11:30
Session 2

Planning of BRT systems starts with demand analysis to identify corridor capacity including network coverage and integration with other modes in the city network.

  • Feasibility studies and demand analysis
  • Building the case for a BRT
  • Comparison with other public transport modes
  • Planning
  • Cost estimates
  • Quantifying the (economic) benefits

Lunch

12:30 13:30
Session 3

Designing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is a multi-disciplinary process that integrates planning, engineering, and operations to deliver an efficient and reliable transit solution. Higher capacity and operational inter-related with operational environment.

  • Right of way
  • Stations

Break

15:00 15:30
Session 4

The vehicle is the part of BRT design depending on demand analysis. Having different types of vehicles in the fleet brings flexibility to be aligned with passenger demand and the opportunity to optimize operational costs.

  • Overview of E-BRT vehicles
  • Impact of operating E-buses on a BRT route
  • Depots
  • Safety & Security

Case Study

17:00 18:00

End of the day

18:00 18:00
