EURNEX was a network of more than 60 universities and research centers from 18 EU member states and Russia, as well as key international transport associations. It was initially a Network of Excellence created under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme, and continued its activities after the EU funding was exhausted.
EURNEX covered all fields of rail transport, including the urban rail modes, with the aim to overcome the fragmentation of the European rail research landscape.
10 Poles of Excellence were created which involved researchers throughout Europe, on different fields of railway research like economics, rolling stock, energy, or environment.
